What you get from the plate

Identity (DVLA: model, year, colour, fuel, engine size, tax and MOT status). History (DVSA: every MOT result, advisory and mileage reading since 2005). Intelligence (Bimmer.AI: the exact engine code and what it fails on, UK cost ranges, recall prompts, chassis weak points, factory options if you add the VIN, and a verdict against the price). What you do not get, and should buy separately for any private sale, is finance, stolen and write-off status.

Bimmer.AI is designed to help you identify BMW-specific buyer risks before you travel, negotiate, or pay for an inspection. It does not replace a physical inspection by a qualified mechanic, a legal vehicle-history check (e.g. HPI Check), or independent verification of finance, stolen, or write-off status. Repair-cost ranges are indicative UK figures that vary by region, specialist, parts supply, and labour rates.

Frequently asked questions

What does a BMW reg check show?

Free, from the registration alone: the DVLA record (make, model, year, colour, fuel, engine capacity, tax and MOT status) and the full DVSA MOT history with every advisory, failure and mileage reading. In the £7 report, from Bimmer.AI's own data: the exact engine code that model and year carries, its known failure modes with UK repair-cost ranges, any engine-specific safety recall to verify, the generation's chassis weak points, and a buy, negotiate or walk verdict. It does not include outstanding finance, stolen or write-off status; use an HPI-grade check for that.

Is the BMW reg check really free?

The DVLA and MOT lookup on any registration is free. The full buyer report (engine identification, known faults, UK costs and a verdict) is £7, with report packs cheaper per report and no subscription. Bimmer.AI does not sell your data or the seller's.

Can I check a BMW's MOT history by registration?

Yes. The report pulls the DVSA MOT record: every test since 2005, pass or fail, the advisories in full, and the mileage at each test as a timeline. Bimmer.AI reads the advisories against the engine and generation, so a repeated 'oil leak' advisory on an N47 or 'suspension arm' on an F10 is flagged as what it usually is.

Does a reg check tell me which engine my BMW has?

The DVLA record only gives engine capacity (for example 1995cc) and fuel. Bimmer.AI resolves the actual engine code from the model, year and, where you supply it, the VIN: N47 or B47, N57 or B57, N55 or B58, original N63 or N63TU. That is the single most important fact about a used BMW and no provenance check provides it.

What does a reg check NOT tell me?

Outstanding finance, whether the car is recorded as stolen, insurance write-off category (Cat S / Cat N / Cat A / Cat B), scrapped status and previous keeper count. Those come from the finance houses, police and insurers via HPI, Experian, the AA and RAC checks or Total Car Check Gold, usually for £5 to £20. Bimmer.AI is the BMW-specific layer; it complements those checks rather than replacing them.

Can I check a BMW from a photo of the number plate?

Yes, in the Bimmer.AI app: photograph the plate and it reads the registration for you. The browser extension does the same on AutoTrader, eBay, Facebook Marketplace and most UK car marketplaces without leaving the listing.

Is a BMW reg check the same as a VIN check?

Related but different. The registration gets you the DVLA and MOT records and a model-level engine identification. The VIN adds the structural decode (plant, model year, series) and, with the factory option codes, the exact specification the car was built with. Bimmer.AI accepts either; give it both when you have them. See the free BMW VIN decoder for the VIN-only path.
