Free BMW VIN Decoder
Decode any BMW VIN in seconds: manufacturer, region, model year and type key, straight in your browser. Then go one step further and look up the factory option codes, MOT history and known faults before you buy.
What a BMW VIN tells you
A BMW VIN is 17 characters and every position means something. Our decoder reads the parts that are deterministic from the VIN alone:
| Positions | What it encodes |
|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | World Manufacturer Identifier: which BMW plant/brand and country (e.g. WBA = BMW passenger car, Germany; WBS = BMW M; WBY = BMW i; 5UX = BMW built in Spartanburg, USA). |
| 4 to 7 | BMW type key: the internal development code that pins down the model line and engine family. |
| 10 | Model-year code (digit for 2001 to 2009, then letters from A = 2010). |
| 11 | Assembly plant code. |
| 12 to 17 | The car's unique production serial number. |
What the VIN does not carry is the option list. Those factory-fitted extras are stored as option (SA) codes in BMW's build data against the VIN. That is the difference between knowing a car is "a 2018 320d" and knowing it is "this 320d, with the M Sport package, adaptive headlights and a head-up display".
Where to find the VIN on a BMW
- V5C logbook (the registration document) in the top-right box.
- Base of the windscreen, driver's side, visible from outside.
- Driver's door jamb sticker.
- Under the bonnet on the suspension turret, and stamped in the boot floor on many models.
- Often quoted directly in an AutoTrader, eBay or dealer listing.
From VIN to a full buyer report
The VIN decode above is the free first step. To turn it into a decision, a Bimmer.AI report takes the VIN (or just the reg), pulls the DVLA record and the full DVSA MOT history, folds in the engine-specific known faults for that exact model, and, when you add the factory option codes, decodes them into a plain-English equipment list. You get the buyer verdict, the cost exposure, and the questions to ask the seller, all in about 30 seconds.
This VIN decoder reads only what the VIN itself encodes and is provided for general buyer information. It is not affiliated with BMW AG and does not access BMW's build database. For finance, stolen, write-off and mileage checks, use a formal history check such as HPI. Always confirm a car with a physical inspection.
Decoded the VIN? Now check the car.
Paste the VIN, the reg, or the option codes into Bimmer.AI for the full BMW-specific buyer report: MOT history, known faults, decoded factory options and a buy, negotiate or walk verdict.

What is a BMW VIN and where do I find it?
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique 17-character code stamped on every BMW. You will find it on the V5C logbook, at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, on a sticker in the driver's door jamb, and often quoted in the listing. It never uses the letters I, O or Q, to avoid confusion with 1 and 0.
Can a VIN tell me which options my BMW has?
Not on its own. The VIN encodes the model, model year, plant and type key, but the fitted option (SA) codes live in BMW's build database keyed to that VIN. Our VIN decoder reads everything the VIN itself carries; to see the factory options you enter the VIN plus the option codes (from the listing or build sheet) into a Bimmer.AI report.
How do I read a BMW model year from the VIN?
The 10th character is the model-year code. Digits 1 to 9 mean 2001 to 2009; then letters run A=2010, B=2011, and so on (skipping I, O, Q, U and Z). Note the model year can differ from the registration year, which is what actually decides UK road tax bands.
What is the BMW type key?
Characters 4 to 7 of the VIN are BMW's internal type (development) code. It is a reliable cross-check on the chassis and engine family: if a seller calls a car one thing but the type key says another, dig deeper before you travel.
Is this VIN decoder free?
Yes. The structural decode runs entirely in your browser and is completely free with no sign-up. The full report, which adds the DVLA record, MOT history, known faults and decoded factory options, is a separate step and costs £7, with no subscription.
Does the VIN prove mileage or write-off history?
No. For finance, stolen, write-off and mileage-anomaly checks you still need a formal history check such as HPI. Bimmer.AI adds the BMW-specific engine and fault picture on top; the two are complementary, not substitutes.
