BMW B37 Engine Reliability Guide

The BMW B37 is the modular 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo diesel of 2014 onwards in the 116d, 216d, X1 sDrive16d, X2 sDrive16d and MINI One D and Cooper D. It is two-thirds of a B47 and shares its strengths: a durable chain and sensible injectors. Its risks are usage-related: DPF, EGR and, on 2018 onwards cars, AdBlue.

Quick verdict

Buy a motorway-mile B37 with the EGR-cooler recall done and it will run to 150,000 miles cheaply. A 116d or 216d that has only done school runs will have DPF and EGR trouble (£300 to £1,500) and, post-2018, AdBlue faults (£300 to £900). The engine itself is not the problem; the journeys are. Euro 6, ULEZ-compliant, 60 mpg on a run.

What is the BMW B37?

B37 cars are cheap-to-run company and hire cars: F20 LCI and F40 116d, F45 / F46 216d, F48 X1 16d, F39 X2 16d, £7,000 to £16,000 in UK classifieds. Read the MOT mileage history before anything else: 12,000 miles a year of motorway is what this engine wants, 4,000 miles a year of town is what kills its DPF. Verify the EGR-cooler recall by VIN on any B37 as you would on a B47.

Common problems

Every failure mode below is based on UK DVSA/recall data, BMW press archives, and observed patterns across independent specialist maintenance schedules. Cost ranges are indicative UK figures.

Failure modeSeverityFrequencyTypical onsetUK repair range
DPF and EGR soot loading from short journeys Moderate Very common 40 to 100k mi £300 to £1,500
EGR cooler coolant leak Serious Uncommon 60 to 120k mi £600 to £1,100
AdBlue (SCR) system faults on 2018-on cars Moderate Common 50 to 100k mi £300 to £900
Thermostat housing and plastic coolant pipe leaks Moderate Common 60 to 110k mi £200 to £500
Timing chain noise Serious Uncommon 80 to 140k mi £900 to £1,500
Diesel injector failure Moderate Uncommon 80 to 140k mi £300 to £600

DPF and EGR soot loading from short journeys

What to do about it: A 30-minute motorway run weekly. EGR valve clean or replacement £200 to £500; forced regeneration £80 to £150.

If ignored: DPF replacement £1,200 to £2,000.

UK repair exposure: £300 to £1,500.

Additional notes: This engine is sold into exactly the short-trip use that hurts it. Check the MOT history for emissions advisories and ask how the car was used.

EGR cooler coolant leak

What to do about it: Check the VIN against the DVSA recall database; have the cooler inspected at services.

If ignored: Coolant into the intake; fire risk that triggered the recall.

UK repair exposure: £600 to £1,100.

Recall / TSB: BMW UK EGR cooler safety recall (2018 to 2019 wave) covered many B47 and B37 diesels. Confirm completion by VIN.

AdBlue (SCR) system faults on 2018-on cars

What to do about it: Keep the tank topped up; replace faulty NOx sensors or injector promptly because the countdown will immobilise the car.

If ignored: Car refuses to start once the countdown reaches zero.

UK repair exposure: £300 to £900.

Thermostat housing and plastic coolant pipe leaks

What to do about it: Replace the leaking part.

If ignored: Overheating.

UK repair exposure: £200 to £500.

Timing chain noise

What to do about it: Front-mounted chain; replace at first noise.

If ignored: Chain jump and valve damage.

UK repair exposure: £900 to £1,500.

Additional notes: Much rarer than on the N47; not a reason to avoid the engine.

Diesel injector failure

What to do about it: Use premium diesel; replace and code the failing injector.

If ignored: Piston crown damage.

UK repair exposure: £300 to £600.

Long-term verdict

A frugal little diesel that is two-thirds of a B47 and shares its strengths: durable chain, sensible injectors. The risks are usage-related. A 116d or 216d that has only done school runs will have DPF and EGR trouble, and post-2018 cars add AdBlue faults. Buy a motorway-mile example with the EGR cooler recall done and it will run to 150,000 miles cheaply.

Buy, negotiate, or walk away

Buy

Motorway-biased MOT mileage history, EGR-cooler recall completed, no DPF or AdBlue warnings, oil level normal (no fuel dilution), fuel filter and oil changed on time.

Negotiate

Town car with no DPF or EGR history (£300 to £1,500 of cleaning waiting), AdBlue warnings on a 2018-on car, thermostat housing weep.

Walk away

DPF removed, rising oil level from failed regenerations, EGR cooler leaking coolant into the intake with the recall not done, or chain noise on a cold start.

Bimmer.AI is designed to help you identify BMW-specific buyer risks before you travel, negotiate, or pay for an inspection. It does not replace a physical inspection by a qualified mechanic, a legal vehicle-history check (e.g. HPI Check), or independent verification of finance, stolen, or write-off status. Frequently asked questions

Is the BMW B37 diesel reliable?

The engine is; its emissions kit is usage-dependent. Chain and injectors are B47-derived and durable. DPF and EGR soot loading from short journeys is the most common complaint (£300 forced regen to £1,500 for a DPF clean and EGR service), the EGR cooler can leak (£600 to £1,100, and it is a recall item), and 2018-onwards cars add AdBlue faults (£300 to £900). Bimmer.AI scores it 7 out of 10.

Which BMWs have the B37?

F20 / F21 116d (2015 to 2019), F40 116d (2019 on), F45 / F46 216d Active and Gran Tourer, F48 X1 sDrive16d, F39 X2 sDrive16d, and MINI One D and Cooper D (F55 / F56). The longitudinal B37D15 sits in the F20 / F21; the transverse B37C15 in everything else.

Does the B37 have the EGR cooler recall?

Yes. BMW's EGR-cooler fire-risk recall (UK NSC R/2018/151 and later extensions) covers the B37 as well as the B47 and N47. Check the VIN on the DVSA recall checker and ask for the dealer confirmation; it is a hard requirement before buying.

Is a 116d B37 a good car for London?

Only if it also does regular longer runs. It is ULEZ-compliant (Euro 6), but a small diesel used purely in town never completes DPF regenerations and ends up with a blocked filter and a full EGR. If your driving is mostly urban, the B38 petrol 116i or 118i is the better car.
